Endometriosis is a painful, inflammatory disease that occurs when tissue grows outside of the uterus. Unfortunately, many women go undiagnosed because the symptoms of endometriosis vary from woman to woman. It is important to consult with an endometriosis specialist to discuss your symptoms and receive a proper diagnosis and staging. Thankfully, the team at Women’s Excellence is equipped to help you!
To properly diagnose the stage of endometriosis a patient has, Women’s Excellence uses a combination of office-based and simple outpatient evaluations.
- Stage 1 is the minimal stage.
- Stage 2 is the mild stage.
- Stage 3 is the moderate stage.
- Stage 4 is the severe stage.
The stage of endometriosis is determined by the extent of pelvic adhesions (scar tissue), the amount of tissue that has spread, the amount of blockage to the fallopian tubes, and the extent to which the disease has spread through the pelvic structure. It is important to note that the stage of Endometriosis does not necessarily reflect the severity of symptoms and pain the patient may experience. For example, a patient with stage 1 endometriosis may experience more pain than a patient with stage 3 endometriosis.
Women’s Excellence uses the latest and newest endometriosis treatment protocols in dealing with the symptoms of endometriosis. In the past, a total hysterectomy, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, was thought to be the only effective treatment for the condition. Today, there are now minimally invasive ways to treat the disease and protect a woman’s fertility, like the da Vinci Robot.
Different than previous surgical procedures to treat endometriosis, the Da Vinci robot actually removes diseased tissue from the body, referred to as excision of Endometriosis. The procedure is minimally invasive which means it is performed with a scope through small incisions and recovery time is much less than a standard “open” surgical procedure.
