Endometriosis and Painful Sex - Women's Excellence

Endometriosis is a common disease that affects about 1 in 10 women.  Endometriosis occurs when the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus onto other organs and areas of the pelvic cavity including the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and bladder.

As you go through your menstrual cycles, this tissue responds to the rise and fall in hormones and tries to thicken and leave the body (like the lining of your uterus does during menstruation), except it has nowhere to go. As a result, adhesions (scar tissue) can form inside your pelvis.

Why does endometriosis cause painful sex?

The endometrial tissue that is growing outside of the uterus becomes inflamed during the menstrual cycle and even other times during the month.  This inflammation in general can be uncomfortable and painful, but during intercourse, the tissues can stretch and pull causing even more pain for a woman.  Some  This pain can be acute during each penetration, or it may present as a deep ache that can last for hours after intercourse.

In addition to painful intercourse, many women also suffer from infertility due to endometriosis lesions.

Ways to relieve painful sex from endometriosis

First and foremost, we recommend to see a specialist right away if you are suffering from painful sex. Painful sex (dyspareunia) can have a significant physical and mental impact on your body.

In the interim, we recommend several at-home approaches to relieving your symptoms of painful sex from endometriosis.

  • Over the counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen
  • Experimenting with different positions during intercourse to find a comfortable position that does not cause pain
  • Using a water-based lubricant
  • Taking a warm bath before and after intercourse
