Endometriosis is a painful and sometimes debilitating disease that affects about 1 in 10 women. Unfortunately, some women may go un-diagnosed for years.
There are many symptoms of endometriosis, but not everyone will experience all of these symptoms.
Here are the most common symptoms of endometriosis:
Pelvic pain or painful periods/cramps (Dysmenorrhea)
Some women complain of constant pelvic pain while others notice severe pain during their menstrual cycle. Although some discomfort is expected during your period, if your pain is affecting your daily life and becoming a constant problem, you should be evaluated by our team.
Heavy or abnormal periods
- A normal period can last anywhere from 3 to 5 days. If you are experiencing periods longer than 7 days along with a heavy menstrual flow, you may have endometriosis.
Painful intercourse (Dyspareunia)
- Painful sex is a common symptom of endometriosis. Painful sex can also lead to more stress and relationship issues.
Infertility
- Studies have shown that endometriosis is related to 1/3 of all cases of infertility in women. Although researches do not have a definite answer as to why endometriosis causes infertility, it is suspected that inflammation and scar tissue can be the root of the problem.
Fatigue
- Stress and chronic pain can take a huge toll on a woman. Many women with endometriosis complain of chronic fatigue as well.
Gastrointestinal issues
- Some gastrointestinal problems that women with endometriosis often complain about are diarrhea, constipation, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and gassiness.
