Cord blood is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and the placenta after the birth of your baby. This leftover blood contains stem cells, which are preserved through cord blood banking. Stem cells are dominant cells that are able to recreate themselves in the body and have the ability to grow into other cells.
Stem cells are the building block of the immune system and are sometimes used to grow into other organs, tissues, as well as other systems in the body. Stem cells are often used to treat certain medical conditions and diseases. It is possible that one day your baby’s stem cells may be used successfully to treat a disease or medical condition of your baby, sibling, parent or family member. Circumstances exist that also inhibit your ability to utilize your baby’s stem cells.
