Endometriosis is the growth of tissue outside of the uterus. Tissue can grow on the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and abdominal cavity. In severe cases, endometriosis can extend to the bladder, ureter, and kidneys.
Some mild cases of endometriosis and pelvic pain can be treated with hormonal therapy and other medications. Most cases of endometriosis will require endometriosis excision surgery in order to remove inflammatory endometriosis tissue, relieve pain, and help restore fertility.
What is excision of endometriosis?
Excision is the careful removal of endometriosis lesions through minimally invasive surgery. Through excision, deep tissue is removed beyond the surface.
Why is excision the preferred method of treatment?
Endometriosis excision is the preferred method of treatment because it removes damaged tissue down to its roots. If endometriosis tissue is left behind, tissue can continue to grow and patients will continue to experience pain. With excision, there is a significant decrease in scar tissue and damage to organs and other healthy tissues.
How is excision performed?
Excision of endometriosis is done through minimally invasive laparoscopy or robotic surgery utilizing the da Vinci robotic surgical system for more complex cases.
What happens after the tissue is removed?
Once the diseased tissue is removed, the specimen is sent to pathology to specifically diagnose the tissue as endometriosis and to rule out endometrial cancer. Pathology reports help identify the severity of the disease and thoroughness of the procedure.
