Women’s Excellence Examines New FDA Approved Orilissa as Part of a Multidisciplinary Treatment Approach to Endometriosis in Conjunction with Excision of Endometriosis
Together with excision of Endometriosis treatment, Orilissa, medication for Endometriosis pain relief, may assist with recurrence of Endometriosis and pain management.
Women’s Excellence specializes in excision as the prime treatment option for Endometriosis in women. Although there is no definitive cure for Endometriosis, excision treatment (surgical removal) of Endometriosis can provide the best results for patients. Aside from surgery, additional therapies like oral contraceptives, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, or hormonal therapies are recommended for patients to help continue to alleviate pain and decrease the amount of disease recurrence. New FDA approved Orilissa, medication for Endometriosis pain relief, may serve as an option for a multidisciplinary approach to Endometriosis. It is important to understand that additional therapies, like Orilissa, will not treat Endometriosis, but rather assist with managing the symptoms and recurrence of the disease after appropriate surgical intervention.
Orilissa, manufactured by AbbVie, works by reducing the production of the hormone estrogen. Clinical trials of Orilissa demonstrated a reduction in common Endometriosis symptoms such as pelvic pain, painful periods, and painful intercourse.
However, like any drug, Orilissa is not the right solution for everyone. There are a variety of side-effects that were noted during clinical trials including bone thinning, headaches, hot flashes, anxiety, depression, and nausea.
“Although it is too early to identify if Orilissa will continue to provide symptom relief and serve as an appropriate adjunct therapy to excision of Endometriosis, it is encouraging and exciting to see that Endometriosis is now generating a significant amount of discussion and research. Many women continue to suffer from Endometriosis due to the lack of knowledge and concern over these symptoms. Women’s Excellence will continue to monitor clinical data and information on Orilissa to determine if this pain treating drug can be integrated into Endometriosis care prior to or after excision surgery.” – Dr. Jonathan Zaidan, MD, FACOG, board certified da Vinci robotic surgical specialist in the excision of Endometriosis.
